New women and children's homeless shelter opens in Seaside

"My hope is that my mom and I will find a good place to live and be there for a long time," said Joyanna Sage, 10, as she settled into a new women and children's shelter in northeast Seaside.

Joyanna and her mother, Christine, are from Warrenton. But the two are homeless.

"It is a little scary to be homeless as a single parent with a ten year old daughter," said Sage. "If the shelter has any illegal activity going on it makes it even more scary. But this is going to be a safe and a clean house. So I feel pretty confident about being here with my daughter."

Joyanna is looking forward to beginning fourth grade at

Gearhart Elementary School this fall.

Sage, who recently lost her job as a registered nurse at a North Coast care center for seniors, hopes the shelter will give her the chance to restart her career.

"I am on unemployment and I am looking for a job," she said. "A series of events happened and I ended up at another shelter. There were a lot of bad things going on there. I was told about this place and now I am here."

On her first day at the shelter, Sage brought in a bag of groceries and supplies.

"I want to help out as best I can. I will try to clean up the place a little."

She hopes the shelter will also give her a chance to heal emotionally.

"I went through profound child abuse and spousal abuse. I need to not go there anymore. I want healthier relationships."

The new women and children's homeless shelter will offer beds for six women and two to four children. It is part of Helping Hands, a Seaside-based non-profit transitional housing organization that focuses on assisting people facing obstacles, working to get people in transition back on their feet. Helping Hands has an 11-member board of directors and a 14-member advisory board.

The organization houses over 100 homeless men, women and children in Clatsop, Yamhill and Lincoln counties.

Alan Evans, Helping Hands coordinator, said the demand for homeless shelters in Clatsop County is growing.

Yamhill County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a head-on collision that took place on Willamina Creek Road Thursday afternoon that left two probation officers from Yamhill County injured and sent a school bus full of children into a ditch.

Officers said that the probation officers, Brian Rucker and Katie Stiller, were taken to Willamette Valley Medical Center in McMinnville and treated for minor injuries after the Ford Taurus they were traveling in crashed head-on into the school bus in the Willamina area. Rucker was driving and Stiller was his passenger.

The accident took place about 3:29 p.m. in the 22000 block of Willamina Creek Road , north of Willamina.

None of the 19 children on board the bus or the bus driver were hurt. The kids were taken off the bus soon after the accident and were either picked up by their parents or taken home on another bus.

There was no information about whether any citations had been issued and the name of the bus driver was not released.
