High school notes: Two Sheldon players chosen for showcase basketball game
Seven area players, including two from two-time defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division I champion Sheldon, will play in the third annual Nor Cal Clash boys basketball showcase Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. at Contra Costa College in San Pablo.
The game will pit elite Northern California players from the Class of 2012 against those from the Class of 2013.
Sheldon senior Kyiron Thomas and junior Dakarai Allen will play in the showcase game.
Joining Thomas on the 2012 team will be Foothill's Michael Bryson, Franklin's Theo Johnson, Oak Ridge's Bryce Scott and Jesuit's Parker Uu.
Franklin's Darin Johnson will join Allen on the 2013 team.
According to various recruiting websites, Scott has received offers from Army and Lafayette; Allen from Colorado, USF and Pepperdine; and Bryson from Colorado.
National recruits Richard Longrus of Oakland's Bishop O'Dowd, Jabari Bird of Richmond's Salesian and 7-footer Robert Upshaw of Fresno's San Joaquin Memorial are among others scheduled to play.
Castro Valley's Nick Jones will coach the 2012 team, St. Joseph's-Notre Dame of Alameda's Don Lippi will coach the 2013 team.
Babineaux opts for prep school
Although he received several high-level football scholarship offers, Folsom graduate Kori Babineaux has decided to attend a Chicago area prep school – Lake Forest Academy – where he'll play basketball, according to Folsom football coach Kris Richardson.
The 6-4, 200-pound Babineaux was a hot college recruit in both football and basketball.
He was a member of Folsom's two Sac-Joaquin Section Division I boys basketball title teams as a freshman and sophomore. Babineaux averaged a team-leading 19.1 points a game as a junior.
But he played football only his senior year. As a wide receiver, Babineaux caught 52 passes for 905 yards and 14 touchdowns for the CIF State Division II Bowl champions.
Babineaux received football scholarship offers from Hawaii, Colorado State, Iowa State, San Diego State and Wyoming, but decided not to follow the path of older brother Brandon, also a former Folsom football and basketball player.

St. Joe's comes into the game winners of eight-straight and defeated University of San Francisco 61-43 in the Northern California championship game last week at Folsom High School. The Pilots (26-9) are led by Brendan Kean (18 ppg) and Jacari Whifield (13 ppg).
St. Bernard lost to Montclair Prep in the section playoffs, but bounced back to roll through the Sourthern California playoffs. The Vikings (26-8) avenged their loss to Montclair and then defeated Sierra Canyon in the final 61-59. Brandon Randolph (18.5 ppg) and Thurman Thomas (15.7)ppg) are the leading scorers.
