Open to all area seniors age 55 and older, this event includes a social hour, fried chicken buffet picnic, frozen Culver’s custard, musical entertainment by Harold Reiner and friends (trumpet and accordion players), and bingo. Bomb victim joins dive club for record scoot - Surrey Aquanauts

A soldier who broke his back in a bomb explosion in Afghanistan is attempting a world record for crossing the English Channel using a sea scooter.

After nearly two years of rehabilitation, Pete Brooks, 27, is setting off across one of the world’s busiest and most-dangerous waterways with three divers from Scarborough Sub Aqua Club (SSAC) in the hope of completing the crossing within 10 hours.

The men have been assembled by SSAC dive leader Heath Samples, with two North Yorkshire firemen – lead fireman Paul Swales and fireman Will Warwick – making up the foursome.

As well as breaking a world record and securing a spot in the Guinness Book of Records, the group is also raising money for services charity Help for Heroes and the RNLI Scarborough.

On August 20, in dry suits and thermal under suits, the men plan to cross nearly 20 miles of Channel in relays, clinging to one of the four torpedo-shaped, battery-powered Sea Doo sea scooters, which travel up to 3knots for about one and a half hours or until its battery gives out.
