With Great Pleasure is a quirky programme in which Simon Singh shares fascinating pieces of writing with underlying scientific themes. Bobby Henderson, the programme reveals, is a physics graduate who challenged the Kansas board of education in 2005 following its decision to teach creationism within its science curriculum.

Creationism is a form of intelligent design – a pseudoscience, as Henderson saw it – based more on faith that pure science.

Henderson wrote to the Kansas authorities suggesting if they were going to teach a creationist theory some people believed in they should also teach his own faith-based idea of creationism that the whole world and all life in it was created by the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

The Gospel of Flying Spaghetti Monsterism, or Pastafarianism, as he called it, is a religious theory unlike any you’ve heard before!

In his chapter on climate change Henderson suggests global warming is not due to a rise in CO2 emissions but due more to the decline in the number of pirates over the last two centuries. Studying a graph of the two demonstrates a very clear correlation.

He noted by dressing up as pirates, as at Halloween when people across the world try to emulate pirate behaviour – complete with wenches and grog – can make a difference to weather patterns. The months following Halloween, Henderson observed, were always colder than the months preceding it... just as his pirates-temperature causal relationship projections predicted.

If the creative, current astrologers put aside the affectation, cheerleading and psycho-babble, and actually carried out the comprehensive delineation and prediction typical of seasoned astrologers who are devoted to their work (rather than striving mostly for ones limelight and book sales) they would be singing a different tune.
