CR offers free classes for qualified veterans
College of the Redwoods, in partnership with the North Coast Veterans Resource Center, Humboldt County Work Investment Board, and the U.S. Department of Labor, will be offer free work training classes for qualified veterans.The classes will be held continuously from the fall 2011 semester through May of 2012. The classes include college-credit green construction classes and not-for-credit trainings and industry certifications. The classes focus on preparing veterans to work in the emerging green jobs construction industry, including solar, home energy use evaluation, testing, and upgrades. For qualified veterans, the class per-unit costs, books and Student Health Center fees will all be covered.
The goal of the program is to assist veterans in getting training to get a better job including help with developing a resume and learning to find green jobs.
Funds from a U.S. Department of Labor grant have helped make this program possible.
Informational meetings about this program have been scheduled at locations around the CR District. The meetings will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. each day and include a free lunch. The meeting dates are: Wednesday, Aug. 17 at the CR McKinleyville Site at 1520 City Center Road, McKinleyville; Friday, Aug. 19 at the CR Eureka Downtown Site at 605 K Street, Eureka; Friday, Aug. 24 at the CR Klamath-Trinity Site at 29 Orchard Road, Hoopa; Friday, Sept. 9 at the Fortuna Veterans Hall at 1426 Main Street, Fortuna; Friday, Sept. 16 at the Garberville Veterans Hall at 483 Conger Street, Garberville (1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at this location); and Friday, Sept. 23 at the CR Del Norte Educational Center at 883 W. Washington Boulevard in Crescent City.
The classes available are: Solar Photovoltaic (a hybrid class with online study and hands-on time in CR’s solar lab); Building Science (about the materials and construction techniques used in building construction, how energy is used and lost in a building, and ways to make the building more efficient); The Emerging Green Jobs Market (how to find a job in this growing sector); Construction Math; Basic Carpentry Skills for the Construction Industry; CT-15 Field Techniques for Historic Preservation (a 3-unit, semester-long college credit class); Home Energy Rating System I (HERS I) and HERS II; US Environmental Protection Agency Renovation, Repair and Painting Certification (for working around lead-based paints); OSHA 10-hour Construction Safety Certificate; Building Analyst Professional Certification; and Asbestos Certification.
