Coping: Sometimes medication may be needed to help with daily moods
I am not in favor of everybody taking psychological (psychotrophic) medication. But there are definitely reasons to try medications like Prozac, Paxil, Wellbutrin, and many others - they can definitely make positive changes in daily mood and personality. As a licensed psychotherapist, I cannot prescribe medication, but rather encourage patients to talk to their doctors about such a consideration.
Having been doing counseling for more than 25 years, I've dealt with many patients who are suffering from neuroticism - a tendency towards emotional instability and negative mood. I can personally relate to this process, having experienced a depressed mood many years ago, which resulted in serious weight loss, and a feeling of hopelessness that made life miserable. Like a plumber who refuses to fix his own pipes, I would not even consider taking medication - that is, until I evolved into a perpetual state of misery that affected my wife and family.
Fortunately, I finally came to my senses and decided to try meds. The first didn't work - it's since been taken off the market - but the second try was a major success. My negative feelings began to change within one week; that was fast and lucky. The glass, regarding almost everything, appeared to be half full rather than empty.
Medication is certainly not for everybody! During most of my years of practice, I have preached the positive aspects on mood of cognitive/behavioral therapy, specifically Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) developed by Albert Ellis in the 1950s. This is a very effective therapeutic model that, when it works, helps people deal more rationally with the neurotic ideas and, consequently, replace depression with positive/rational thoughts that result in feeling GOOD! At times, however, it is not enough and medication may be needed in partnership to produce functionally positive results. Anyone interested can go on line and check out Albert Ellis and/or REBT.
Ellis was a tough New York doctor who did not always suffer fools lightly. His therapy, however, was based on the importance of feeling good. All the medical and therapeutic treatment in the world makes no difference if you don't end up feeling better and more able, within certain boundaries, to enjoy life.

My sister really scared my family for a long time. She would go through serious depression after certain events. If she did not do well at an interview or if a friend did not like her, she would take it really hard. We finally convinced her to do rational emotive behavior therapy . It really helped her to learn new ways of thinking about things. She can process things better and she does not struggle with depression. We really were praying for her, and things are looking good now. She actually got let go from her job and she was okay. Of course, she was disappointed, but she did not overreact. We are so happy that she went through the therapy! Hey therapist says she’ll probably be good to go pretty soon. We are all so proud of her. She has come such a long way from where she was. This therapy helped a lot!
