There are PWDs who do search and rescue. Personally, if I were using mine that way (I have 2), I would keep their hair cut pretty short. Other than that, sure they can do it. It really just depends on the drive of the dog. There are PWDs who do cancer detection, so, clearly, they can use their nose to find things. I also know PWDs who do very well in agility, tracking and obedience. The Portuguese Water Dog Club of America (and its regional clubs) also offer water trials, which is a water sport specifically designed for portuguese water dogs only. Newfies also have a form of this sport that is designed for them. Water trials are, in my opinion, the most fun. You can check it out at the web site I’ve included.
The Portuguese Water Dog has a lot of great qualities: he’s tireless, and fun loving, with a great sense of humor. He’s also smart enough that he can out think you if you don’t stay a step ahead of him. You may frequently find yourself laughing as he plays the clown to get your attention.

Search and Rescue dogs can be of any breed, and are specially trained for that purpose. Most don’t complete the program. Toy Poodles have found missing children, human remains, etc. And most people wouldn’t consider this breed to be able to do that. Not saying no other breed can do that, but you get the idea.
Get your dog involved in basic obedience training first, and then get a referral from your instructor as to training him for other sports and competitions.
