RSO, Kilties ready to 'Raise the Roof' in Aug. 26 concert

So much sound will emanate from inside Festival Hall on Aug. 26, that the doors might have to be left open to allow some of it to escape. For the first time ever, the Racine Symphony Orchestra will join forces with the Kilties Drum & Bugle Corps in concert that night. Together they will present an evening of music destined to "Raise the Roof," according to Bonnie Prochaska, executive director of the RSO.
The concert will open with the orchestra playing "The Star-Spangled Banner" (featuring a Kilties bugle soloist), followed by Suppe's "Light Calvary Overture," Mendelssohn's "Scottish Symphony," and Custer's "Salute to the Big Bands." Racine's Kilties will then take center stage and present parts of their 2011 field show, titled "Three Faces of Drum Corps," including versions of "Auld Lang Syne," "MacArthur Park," and "Interstellar Suite." And, last - but certainly not least - the two groups will perform Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" and Sousa's "Starts and Stripes Forever" together.
Their musical collaboration will be a unique experience for everyone involved, said Pasquale Laurino, artistic director of the RSO, as it brings together the proud tradition of the drum and bugle corps - which comes from military history, most often marching and playing outdoors - and that of the symphony orchestra, which performs seated in a concert hall or amphitheater.

Tuning any musical instrument is the science of adjusting the pitch of many desired tones until you meet the required tone for the desired arrangement.
