Opera Tampa's Vocal Arts Festival: Opera Idol
Opera Tampa’s 2011 Vocal Arts Festival began Monday, August 1st, with “Opera Idol”, featuring the “Generation X” singers. The Generation X singers are singers between the ages of 15 and 20 from all around the nation. During the event, each singer sang an aria or song of their choice before both a live audience and a panel of judges.
With a knowledgeable panel of judges critiquing on vocal technique and expression, stage presence, diction, and much more, this was not only an excellent opportunity to showcase their skills to an audience, but also to receive very specific and personalized feedback. The event allowed each of the 11 young singers to exhibit and receive praise for their strengths and constructive criticism for their weaknesses.
The night was filled with beautiful song, both familiar and unfamiliar, as well as some pleasant surprises. After hearing 17 year old Peter Matthew Jackson’s spectacular rendition of the famous aria, “Non Piu Andrai”, from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro , he astounded the audience all the more by revealing he had been studying voice for only a year. Similarly, Jaylyn Andrus, only 15, wowed us all with her full, plush voice and poise on stage. Seeing such potential and dedication is truly beautiful and inspiring.
The beauty behind the structure of the show, with a panel of judges, was that it really allowed for the singer to explain their choice in song, interpretation, and approach. Understanding the thought process behind the song was very insightful for the audience members, but also allowed for the judges to better help the singers. This approach allowed for the singers to take in valuable advice from these experienced judges, such as knowing the meaning of every word they sing or simply getting more comfortable on the stage.
