University of Pittsburgh Receives $3.54M Grant
Swanson School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh received a grant of 3.54 million from the Wallace Foundation H. Coulter. Pitt is one of five universities across the country to receive Coulter Foundation Translational Partnership Award II, the five-year grant to the Department of the Swanson School of Bioengineering will fund research that uses engineering techniques to develop improvements in health care, with the ultimate goal of accelerating the introduction of new technologies in patient care.
The Coulter Foundation Award will be supplemented by $ 1.5 million in matching funds from the School of Medicine, Pitt, Swanson School and the University Office of Technology Management.
"We are delighted to have been chosen to receive this award and participate in the Coulter Foundation. Not only will it be a huge advantage over individual researchers who receive funding, but says both the growing importance and future potential of bio-engineering program at Pitt, "said Gerald D. Holder, U.S. Steel Dean of Pitt's genius.
Harvey Borovetz, Chair of the Department of Bioengineering, the L. RobertHardesty Professor, School of Medicine Department of Surgery and deputy director of the Artificial Organs and Medical Devices Division of the Institute of Pitt-UPMC McGowan for regenerative medicine, is the principal investigator and one of three co-leaders for Coulter's program at Pitt.
Other members of the management team for the program at Pitt Coulter Stephen Badylak, a professor at the School of Medicine Department of Surgery and director of tissue engineering at McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, and Marc Malandro, director of the Office of Technology Management and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of technology management and marketing at Pitt.
Pratap Khanwilkar used the program director and visiting professor in the Coulter Department of Bioengineering in the Swanson School and as director in residence at the University Office of Technology Management.
