Simplifying the Complexities of Being a Team Physician for Professional ...
Dr. Doug Freedberg: There are a few things I do to make something that seems complex actually pretty simple. Beyond explaining the injury or condition and discussing options with the player and athletic trainer, I ask the player if there is anyone else to whom they want me to talk. Often this is the agent, and frequently also a family member. With other players, no calls are needed. This way, we have satisfied the player and adhered to HIPAA requirements. In regards to communicating with the team, each has its own scenario. Always, I'm speaking with the athletic trainer and sometimes I speak with the general manager directly as well, whereas protocol may dictate the information flows through the trainer. Team physicians should know the preferred approach for their specific team. In some cases for particular players, the agents add to the confusion, but more often are helpful as a trusted advisor to the player. DF: We encourage the athletes to have second opinions — the last thing they want as a player is to feel steered in a direction they don't want to go. There are some players who have a history with a particular surgeon, whether from high school or college. Agents often have strong relationships with surgeons and may push the player to travel across the country even for a simple procedure. If that's what they want, that's what they get. In my experience, players will seek second opinions and we often ask if they desire one, but it is very rare that they have an interest in going elsewhere for surgery. The key is to have trust in the locker room and a good rapport with players. Being available and approachable is the best start. Over a period of time, your best advocates are often experienced players who trust you and have seen that you can produce good results, whether surgical or even difficult injuries treated non-operatively.Media Affects On Professional Athletes - News

The Precarious and Often Lethal Ill Effects of Anabolic Steroids
Discussion abounds around side effects when a well-liked professional athlete is recognized by the news media as a user of anabolic steroids. Information on this topic goes back for decades and this information is not regarded as timely news. A well-loved professional football player died due to a brain tumor. Anabolic steroids were used for the entirety of his athletic career. He also implied that his steroid use was a reason for the cancer. The use of steroids to intensify results is not possible even with the consideration of any heretofore-unknown angles. The dire side effects of anabolic steroids will now be parlayed. laboratory services
We all understand that professional sports, including American football, are very hazardous in several ways. We are not yet able to recognize all of the users of steroids. A great number of upper level performance athletes, including those involved with football, experience ligament and tendon injuries. One cannot assume anything from this expression. Ligament injuries are all too commonly associated with steroid usage. There is a simple explanation for that, as well. While steroids create robust muscles, it does not change the breaking threshold of the ligaments or tendons. It can be equated with pulling a rubber band tighter and tighter until it eventually fails. One somewhat unexpected side effect of muscle growth due to steroid use concerns simple geometry. The muscle groups can become so large that they hinder the normal functioning of other parts of the anatomy. Bone and joint space is limited due to the rapid development of muscle tissues. Obviously this presents a simple problem for the athlete, albeit an unusual one at that. The pro athlete will have to handle this situation as well as others that may arise from time to time. The long term use of anabolic steroids becomes less and less effective as time goes on. More broken bones will be experienced with this type of case.
