Mapping The Real State Of America

Driving is, as you can see, down from last year, as the recession and high gas prices pinch transportation plans. (Maybe everyone's taking their bikes and public transportation?) As you can see, states with major metropolitan areas tend to have less driving. In Oklahoma, the non-car options are presumably quite worse.
It's an interesting contrast between states that drive less and states that are fatter. The authors have also included a map of fruit consumption to contrast with this map of obesity. It seems that both driving less and eating more fruit could be related to weighing less. What's potentially most surprising is how many people in Washington, D.C. are eating fruit, beating even California, where much of the fruit in Washington, D.C. is likely from. This also surely plays into some stereotypes about New England and the Northeast, given how concentrated fruit consumption is. Make your own judgments.
It's easy to read stories in the newspaper about trends and statistics (or simply extrapolate from your own anecdotal experience), but maps like those in the book are the best way to see how that information actually plays out. In a country this big, there isn't any way of truly knowing what's happening without looking at the data

What's the best way to navigate all these roads that you won't find on your typical Maine highway map? You need a copy of the Maine Atlas & Gazetteer . This atlas provides arguably the most comprehensive coverage for all of Maine and all of its roadways, whether they are public or private.
You'll get complete coverage for the State at a scale of 1:125,000 (an inch equals 2 miles). The atlas does this by breaking the state into a series of grids, which you can quickly locate on the index map on the back cover of the Atlas. Then you just flip to the page that covers that area. The scale on the maps is big enough so that it's easy to navigate around the State. The maps include information on just about everything you'll come across from public boat launches to airports and museums. The maps also contain contours so that you can get an idea of the topography of the area you are traveling through.
Besides the maps, the Atlas also contains information about Maine that includes a list of all its public lands, campgrounds, sites of interest and other useful information. All of this is indexed to the maps, so you can find something you are interested in and then flip to it on the maps.
My Take
For anyone who travels in Maine, especially in the less developed areas, you really should have a copy of the Maine Atlas and Gazetteer from DeLorme.
