School Leavers Urged to Avoid Full Moon Party
School leavers are often desperate for an escape before they head off to university or the big wide world of work. We’ve heard that increasingly, it is the ‘mini gap’ that students are opting for during their summer break, over the ludicrously expensive gap year that the lucky few get to experience. However, police are now warning parents that their little ones should avoid exotic destinations such as Thailand when planning their getaways.
The Full Moon Party on Thailand’s Koh Phangan island is one such example of somewhere that teenagers are being told to avoid due to its less than savoury reputation. Every month around 10,000 people gather on the Haad Rin beach in order to party their A-level results away.
The otherwise beautiful beach is transformed one night a month to a scene of revellery and debauchery. What started out as a started out in the eighties as a gathering as a send-off for some Australians after a prolonged stay at the resort has developed beyond all recognition.
However Sutti Kuasurkul, who started the festival all that time ago, must live with what the festival has become. For him and so many others on the island, it brings in a large amount of revenue.
For the teenagers, their trip to the island is less about a traditional festival, and more about sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Or hardcore dance music, as the case may be. There are multiple couples spotted using the sea for ‘privacy’, hard drugs are sold on the beach, and alcohol is dirt cheap. No wonder so many end up at the doctor’s. “They suffer acute alcohol intoxication and serious dehydration. It’s mainly young backpackers, aged 18 to 22″ says Kritsada Wonghianchai, a local doctor.
Some of the teens even end up having to be hospitalised for psychiatric care after taking more than a little bit questionable drug conconctions. Suicides are not uncommon either, with a warning having gone out from the Foreign Office.

-Tons of stuff to do on the island of Phuket. Another viable option would be Krabi, which tends to be a little more relaxed and less crowded than Phuket (Koh Phi Phi can easily be gotten to via Phuket or Krabi).
Koh Phangan is more of a place for backpackers & the like. If that’s your thing, go for it. You would, however, probably have to fly into Koh Samui & then there would be extra travel time to get there.
Air travel is pretty cheap in Thailand with the domestic airlines mentioned below. While you could take train or bus, I think you would find your trip too rushed.
From Koh Tao take a speed boat to Koh Phangan and Samui.
If you’ve been in Koh Tao, you can skip Koh Phangan becasue the beaches are very similar but the sea is not so beautiful as Koh Tao. If you like to visit Full Moon Party, Koh Phangan is the place to go. Be careful that 3-5 days before the full moon party most of the bungalows are fully booked.
