Man, woman die in head-on crash on I-5

A man of 22 years and 21 years of passenger woman died Saturday morning when the SUV they were in crashed head on with another driver on Interstate 5 south of Kern County, Kings County border according to California Highway Patrol.

The 22-year-old 2000 Ford Explorer was traveling northbound on I-5 just after midnight, when for unknown reasons crossed the center median and into southbound lanes on I-5. The man crashed head on with Antonio Romero, 48, of Los Angeles, who was driving a Mitsubishi truck in 2005. Both vehicles overturned and came to rest on the southbound shoulder.

Romero was taken to Kern Medical Center by ambulance and was treated for injuries that included cuts to his face.

The man, of Oceanside, and the woman, from Vista, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names are withheld by the Coroner's Office Kern County.

All were wearing seat belts.
