Brothers scoop top sheep prize at Cartmel Show
TWO young brothers who scooped one of the top prizes at one of Cumbria’s biggest events have described winning as the ‘best feeling you can get in farming’.
With show season well and truly underway, the 128th Cartmel Show brought thousands of people to the sun-baked Cartmel Park.
And Chris and Tom Ladd, 18 and 14 respectively, were overjoyed when their two-shear Texel tup was named best in show for the sheep section.
The victory came just days after the same sheep was named champion Texel at Penrith Show.
“This is even better because it is the first time we have been here,” said Chris, who works on the family farm, Benson Hall, in Kendal.
They won despite strong competition from an impressive entry, and Chris added: “It is brilliant knowing you are the best – you cannot get any better than this and it makes it all worthwhile.”
And, after a tense morning of judging, the winner of best in show in the cattle section was named as Infloence (CORRECT) Elope (CORRECT), a five-year-old Holstein heifer shown by David Wright, of Berry Holme Farm near Brigsteer.
Asked why he thought the cow won, the 26-year-old said: “It’s a well-balanced dairy animal – well put together.
“I am really pleased. You never know how you are going to do when you come along. It has been a great entry this year and that’s good to see. It’s good to support a local show.”
Elsewhere on the showground, visitors enjoyed watching horse and dog classes, children’s activities including a climbing wall, and a well-stocked food tent, where Stuart Higginson, of Higginson’s of Grange, celebrated winning in the sheep section’s best pair of mule shearlings class.
Meanwhile, over at the village industries tent, honorary secretary of 18 years Christine Knipe enjoyed being named best in show with her king-size patchwork quilt.
She said: “It’s the first time I have ever won that and I’m absolutely delighted. We have got a fantastic entry here with some absolutely stunning exhibits.

Diary of Yokies: Trip to Bali
Early morning black out bout 1am all of the boys (us) got out and play cards lol (Black out is due to the weekly cut off for the government does not have enough to supply the entire place)...Could not stand it T_T Bout noon the group is ready (Most of them normally wake up late some lazy to get up :P) Went to water park...Nice rides (been a long time since I enjoy the water park) Went to the mall to get Sour Sally to eat yogurt. Because of the black out. (This time is because of the circuit box lol) Went to the mountains...And tried off the obstacle course. I need to be the last to ensure that all manage to go through...there r 6 courses black, red, blue, orange, green and yellow (in order of hardest to easiest) Ive completed all except the green cause of time constrain. We started of the blue course then all 8 of us completed it. CS went to rest for he was sick that day :/ For me I personally manage to complete all except green because of time constrain :/ but it was fun though. Lunch we all went out to eat soto white (yellow is for night) go to look at souvenirs shop (locals go there too) bought 3shirts n the nuts promised for parents. Went to the beach which was ruin by the government. Used to be beautiful four months ago see the beach hiding in the forest...now?!?! all man made T_T. So we traveled so far but have nuts in return. We decided to head out to another beach. cheaper like 1/8 of the cost XD and not good but better then that beach then we head on home. Oh yeah frens were drinking early in the morning...They sure did woke me up... Drunken peoples...:-/ they were welcoming Marcells sis, call her Momo.
