Review: Tiger Electronics I-Dog Dance Written on Dec 8, 2008 by Brian and filed under Reviews , Tiger Electronics

I-Dog Dance is another in the I-Dog line of music speakers from Tiger Electronics. To be accurate, it’s actually called an Interactive Music Companion, and to be fair, the I-Dog Dance is much more than just a dog-shaped speaker.

Getting Started

Setup of the I-Dog Dance is simple. Install three AA batteries (included) and the I-Dog Dance is ready to be connected to any audio device with a heapdphone jack (cable included) as a speaker. Dance will also do his moves while in listen mode, sitting near a speaker. Dance comes in white or black, retails for $40 and is recommended for kids 8 and up.

Turn Dance on by pressing his nose button. You’ll know he’s on, he’ll do a little start-up dance complete with noises and lights. Dance is turned off by pressing the nose button for two seconds, but he will turn off automatically after an hour to preserver battery life.

Below the nose button is one of Dance’s two speakers. The other is located on his back. The two speakers produce reasonable sound, about what you’d expect form something like this. The mids are pretty solid, but there’s little bass and the highs struggle, especially at higher volumes. They’re about what you get on a small notebook by comparison. We’re not going to complain much though given the target audience, price and additional functionality that makes this device more than just a speaker.

It’s easy to miss, but Dance’s tail also acts as a mute button when in play mode. Push the tail down to mute the speakers. Incidentally, the light show and dance action continues even while in mute.

In addition to be a speaker and dancing dog, I-Dog Dance also has seven lights on his touch-sensitive face to interact with. Kids can use gestures with their fingers to make I-Dog Dance move and interact with them. This is also the volume control, a drag of a finger down the middle turns the volume down while the opposite turns it up. The touch panel is actually pretty good and something all of our test kids had a lot of fun with.
