Army doubles tribute to Vietnam vets

1 In 2010, in honor of those who served, the U.S. Army placed 500 photos of veterans on the Stewart-Haas Racing No. 39 Chevrolet driven by Ryan Newman in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for the race on Veterans Day weekend.

This year, the Army will double that number by adding the Don Schumacher Racing Top Fuel dragster to its stable of cars paying tribute to Vietnam veterans, men and women, with special paint schemes. The cars will mark the 50th anniversary of the start of the conflict in Southeast Asia.

The selected photos will be on the hood, trunk, side panels and bumpers of Newman's car Nov. 13 at the Kobalt Tools 500k race at Phoenix International Raceway. Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher will drive the dragster with the custom paint scheme at the Nov. 13 NHRA Auto Club of Southern California Finals at Fairplex.

"It's truly inspiring to represent our soldiers who served in Vietnam," Schumacher said. "Many of the Vietnam veterans are drag racing fans who grew up at the height of the muscle-car and hot-rod era.

"We see many Vietnam vets at our NHRA races, and that's why this paint scheme will carry a special meaning for our U.S. Army team."

Earlier this summer, Newman carried a paint scheme that honored NASCAR owner and Hall of Fame member Bud Moore. Prior to his distinguished stock car career, Moore was cited for his bravery during the D-Day landings in France in 1944.

"What a cool way for us to say `thank you' and honor the Vietnam veterans," said Newman, a 15-time NASCAR Sprint Cup race winner. "History tells us that many who served in Southeast Asia were not properly recognized upon their return.

"It will be our sincere privilege to commemorate the Army Strong Vietnam soldiers who fought bravely for democracy."

Families and friends can nominate veterans by submitting photos (in uniform) at www.goarmy.com/yourphotohere . Nominations and images will be collected through Sept. 16.

Groups Launch Boycott of Amazon | HHS Network CA

Original Story

Nan Brasmer says she won’t buy anything from Amazon anymore.

The 72-year-old president of the 950,000-member California Alliance for Retired Americans is among dozens of community leaders planning to gather in Sacramento Monday morning to launch a consumer boycott of the Seattle-based retailer.

The boycott — and an online petition at ThinkBeforeYouClickCA.org — targets Amazon for its efforts to overturn a new California law that requires internet retailers to collect sales tax from their customers.

The boycott is backed by many Demoratic members of the state Legislature, including East Bay Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner and State Senator Loni Hancock, both of whom are slated to appear at the Sacramento press event.

“You have to pay tax for what you pay for,” Brasmer said.

Billions of dollars in state budget cuts have already eliminated adult day care and in home support services for the elderly and disabled, and have forced both the University of California and California State University systems to raise tuition.

More cuts would be required if the on-line sales tax is over-turned, she said: “If I’m buying from Amazon to avoid paying sales tax and I can’t go to the free kitchen for seniors anymore, what have I done but cut off my nose to spite my face?”
