Gov. Brown will be in Fresno Wednesday - Fresno Bee Opinion Talk
Gov. Jerry Brown makes his first trip to Fresno since being elected on Wednesday. He has several meetings scheduled, including sessions with Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin and the Fresno City Council, the agricultural community and law enforcement.
He speaks at noon to members of the Kenneth Maddy Institute at the Downtown Club and will meet at 3 p.m. with The Fresno Bee editorial board.
We have many questions for the governor, including what he is doing to improve the job outlook in a region with 17% uneployment, his take on the future of the controversial high-speed rail project and how his prisoner realignment program will impact the safety of local citizens. Here's our editorial on the issue.
Realignment is especially complicated in Fresno because local jail officials don't have the resources to handle current prisoners, and they don't believe the state will provide enough money to cover the state prisoners who will be transferred to the local jail.
Republican Assembly Member Linda Halderman issued the following statement on Brown's visit. She's also concerned about the governor's realignment program.
"I welcome Governor Brown on his first official trip to Fresno. During his visit today, the Governor may face some tough questions about the public safety 'realignment' plan--including the early release of tens of thousands of criminals--and the devastating cuts to the new Fresno veterans home. But I believe that hearing the priorities of the people of the Central Valley will give him an important perspective, and I hope he visits us again soon.
