Endowment Fund Will Preserve History
As the county seat of northwest Indiana, Crown Point has always been the center of activity for Lake County, and as a result, the downtown area features a number of beautifully-restored and well-maintained historical places.
For starters, you'll find the historic former Lake County Courthouse as the primary anchor for an unparalleled historic town square surrounded by beautifully renovated Victorian homes.
With a seamless blending of old and new, Crown Point's unique community spirit is immediately apparent in its historic downtown where you'll find not one, but four features from the National Register of Historic Places: the Old Lake County Courthouse, the Old Homestead, the Old Sheriff's House and Jail plus the designated Courthouse Square Historic Downtown and surrounding Historic District.
Thanks to the longstanding efforts from dedicated members of the Lake County Courthouse Foundation, the Old Homestead Foundation and the Old Sheriff's House and Jail Foundation as well as the City of Crown Point and countless other community supporters, these areas have been preserved for future generations to enjoy and appreciate.
The focal point of Crown Point since 1878, the ornate Lake County Courthouse, affectionately referred to as the "Grand Old Lady," was retired from government service in 1974, however threats of demolition were started much earlier in order to create a parking lot for the downtown businesses years earlier.
The impressive structure, which was designed by Chicago's J.C. Cochran and combines Romanesque and Georgian architectural styles, was saved when it was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
Meticulously renovated and maintained, the Grand Old Lady continues to welcome tourists, shoppers and visitors from across the country with a variety of hometown shops and restaurants, grand rental ballroom, stately offices and, of course, the Lake County Historical Museum.

Fairfield woman indicted in death of Princeton football player
SPRINGDALE — A Fairfield woman was indicted Friday by a Hamilton County grand jury in the fatal shooting of a Princeton High School football player.
Tiana Sullivan, 22, was indicted on charges of murder and aggravated robbery, according to the Hamilton County Clerk of Courts website.
Police say Sullivan shot 18-year-old Lamar Williams around 3 a.m. July 20 while fleeing the scene of an armed robbery at the Willows Apartments on Chesterdale Court in Springdale.
Sullivan, Williams and a 17-year-old boy, who is not being named because of his age, allegedly robbed three people at gunpoint at the apartment complex. As the trio fled the scene, Springdale police say Sullivan’s gun went off, sending a bullet into Williams’ neck. Sullivan drove Williams to Mercy Hospital Fairfield. He was transferred to University Hospital in Cincinnati, where July 24 he succumbed to his injuries.
Williams was a two-year starter at safety on the Princeton football team and was a member of the Class of 2012.He split time in the classroom between Princeton and Live Oaks Career Development Campus in Cincinnati.
Sullivan remains in the Hamilton County Justice Center in lieu of a bond $ 300 000. The teenager is being held in juvenile detention center in Cincinnati.
