Contest-winning pastor feels blessed with talent | The News ...

Robbie Sondag, a youth pastor at Fellowship Missionary Church in Fort Wayne, is blessed with both contest luck and skill.

Sondag, 48, has won two national contests in the past six months. He was the winner of the Sears “Procrastisanta” contest last December and was named as one of the six winners of Dairy Queen's Mini Blizzard Treatment Sweepstakes this month. He received his latest prize, a new Mini Cooper, Tuesday at the Dairy Queen at 501 Lower Huntington Road.

The Procrastisanta contest consisted of an online application – an essay of 200 or fewer words on why the contestant should be selected as Sears' Procrastisanta. As the name implies, the Procrastisanta is someone who puts off holiday shopping until the last minute. Sondag said he was a good pick.

“I used to do all of my shopping on the 24th,” he said.

When he was selected as the Sears Procrastisanta, he won $15,000. For the sake of publicity, the company encouraged him to spend a good portion of the money immediately.

“We got a lot of stuff that we wanted, like a new grill, a lawnmower and hardwood floors. We also gave some money away,” Sondag said.

Sondag enters national contests fairly often, but only ones that he feels as if he has a shot at winning and ones that he perceives are worth his time.

Sondag saw Dairy Queen's contest with the prize of one of six customized Mini Coopers. He always liked Mini Coopers, so he decided to enter the contest.

The Dairy Queen Mini Blizzard Treatment Sweepstakes was used to promote DQ's Mini Blizzard. In this contest of “epic mini proportions,” contestants made short videos of themselves “helping someone else in a big Mini Blizzard way.” Each of the vehicles was sponsored by a different possible Blizzard and Mini Blizzard topping choice. Sponsors included Oreo, Reese's, Butterfinger, Snickers, M&M's and Nutter Butter.
