One Of The Good Guys

"Captain America: The First Avenger" (122 min., Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action). Rating: 7

For those of you who have followed comic book superheroes, it's hard not to praise the originals like Superman, Batman and The Green Hornet...fresh out the gate in the late 1930s. Captain America may have been genetically altered to be four times faster and stronger than the average man, but like other early superheroes, he was imbued with a good sense of right, bravery and courage - and was regarded as a model citizen. Okay, Batman was a bit on the dark side.

We are now in the 11th year of the superhero craze that started with "X-Men" and "Spider-Man" - and those two series are still going strong. What separates "Captain America: The First Avenger" from the rest is that it takes place in the early 1940s with 1940s sensibilities, values - and for the most part, technology. Like "Rocketeer" and "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow", this film takes advantage of a time and place not usually ventured into. That's a good thing because it helps bring the story and characters down to earth...makes the preposterous storyline less preposterous.

Captain America was the first of a group of superheroes to join an elite fighting force called "The Avengers" in the 1960s. This is when Marvel Comics rebooted Captain America. Unified by the eye-patched Nick Fury, others like Iron Man, Thor and Hulk joined the force to fight extraterrestrial evil threatening the world. With that movie coming out next year, it was essential to anchor it with Captain America, which will kickoff a new superhero series. Just what we need - more comic book superhero movies - and 2012 will see the third Batman movie and new versions of Superman and Spider-Man. Enough already, guys!

Anyway, taken on its own merits, "Captain America" is a good movie. Chris Evans, who starred in "The Fantastic Four", plays Steve Rogers, a 5'2" 97-lb. weakling with a heart of gold and best of intentions to serve his country fighting the Nazi's. It's 1942 and the war is raging on - but there is no mention of fighting the Japanese. Rogers is continually rejected - and ridiculed - by the U.S. Army to join because of his sickly, puny condition. But he is selected by a brainy scientist (Stanley Tucci) who subjects Rogers to a genetic enhancement experiment that if successful will create an army of super soldiers. Though the experiment is a success transforming Rogers into a super-being, it is sabotaged and the serum and scientist are destroyed before others can be manufactured. Alas, Rogers is the only one who has been genetically enhanced.
