The art we live with -- design around the house
Anything you do that has to do with design in Grand Rapids must start with John Berry, who would be considered the Grand Poobah of form, function and designs for living in this country—and probably further afield than that, when you think about it—if there was such a designate. In John Berry's biography for Director of Design West Michigan (he is also a professor at Kendall College of Art & Design and curator and liaison to the Eames Office liason to Herman Miller); it lists architecture, graphic design, industrial design, interior design and other, and under Industry there's education, furniture, manufacturing, professional services and other. Of course, none of this communicates what his 40 years in the business of people and things is about. But that is precisely what makes the subject of designs we live with so intriguing to so many people who try to write about the crazy messiness of art and science.
John Berry's contributions have been plentiful on the communications side of design, where he has been a leader and developer, a corporate director, an author, an archivist and a curator, a teacher and a student. John Berry is surprisingly accessible, considering who he is, because the focus of his life is about getting the word out, which makes somebody like me—trying to get a handle on this big, important subject—a person he can empathize with. "Let's define design," he says. "Design is really problem-solving and understanding where the user is coming from. Design is about meeting the needs of others. There is a critical difference between art and design. Art is all about self-expression. Artists can say what they want to say. Design may be at some point considered to be art if it meets the appropriate criteria. But the definition is important, because of the confusion of art and design in the business world. And then [in that world] design can be thought of as a luxury. You have to move design out of this realm of exclusivity and into the realm of necessity.
